God is faithful. If I am willing to arise in the morning to spend time alone with Him, He is always there waiting for me. There is none like Him.
Today I unfolded God’s Word in 1 Peter 1-3. It’s been awhile since I have been in this part of God’s Treasure Rooms. I found a lot of meat there. The words that I was drawn to for today is found in 1 Peter 2:1-3:
1 Peter 2:1-3 – So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness. (NLT)
I can only speak for myself, but have you noticed all the evil behavior that surrounds us today? The deceit. The hypocrisy. The jealousy. The unkind speech?
What does Peter tell us to do in these verses?
- Get rid of all evil behavior. Deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, unkind speech.
- Then like newborn babies – crave pure spiritual milk.
- Crave the spiritual milk so you can grow into a full experience of salvation.
- Cry out for this nourishment.
- You have tasted the Lord’s kindness.
Today’s words are about growing up – growing up in the Lord. It is about a heart-check. It is about putting stones down and taking a look at where you are at on your journey with the Lord.
As I read these words I thought about another verse that speaks about spiritual milk. Take a look at Hebrews 5:11-14:
Hebrews 5:11-14 – We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (NIV)
I truly believe that this is the answer to our problems as Children of God today. Too many have been on the spiritual milk – the milk that nourishes new believers. There are even those who haven’t even tasted the spiritual milk in a long time. We are dead – stuck in our ways – ways that are becoming evil.
In these verses, Peter is saying that they have been slow to learn. He is telling them that they should be teachers now – drawing others to Jesus, but instead you still need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word over and over again.
What is the answer to our problems today? We need to unfold the Word of God and get into the spiritual milk and nourish our minds with Truth. Then grow up a little so that we can start solid foods. Solid food is for the mature – we train our minds to be able to distinguish good from evil.
My words may sound a little harsh this morning, but they are necessary. God’s children – some who have called themselves Christians for 10, 20, 30 or even 50 years and more have not been nourishing themselves with the spiritual milk for new believers – let alone even thinking about changing over to solid foods.
IT IS TIME! IT IS TIME TO GROWN UP IN THE LORD! Stop pointing fingers at others and start dealing with our own messes. Find someone who has been able to find their way through the messes and is walking closely with God – then ask them to help you get on the path to spiritual milk. It is not too late.
I have taught from these Words of God many times. Each time, I have used an illustration with a newborn baby. We get so excited when we see a newborn baby. Everyone wants to hold her/him. They start out on milk and need constant care 24 hours a day. Yet, when we see that same baby in a year and his mother is still carrying him because he cannot walk and is still just drinking milk, we think to ourselves, “why isn’t that baby growing up? Shouldn’t he be walking by now? At least he should be on some solid foods.”
It should be the same for us – spiritual children of God. Have you started on the spiritual milk yet? Have you nourished yourself on the elementary Truths? Did you move on to solid foods?
Heavenly Father, I pray today that my words are filled with Your Love and Your Grace. I pray that people will not be offended by Your Words – but truly start seeking You for a heart check. Help us to put down stones and come into Your Presence and let you start peeling away the layers that need to come off of us. Help us to get into the spiritual milk by unfolding Your Word. Help us to move on willing to the solid foods – the foods for mature believers. Father God, you are so gracious and loving to us. I ask these requests in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
My Song: Is it time for you to move out into the deep – the deep waters of faith? Of trust? You can’t just stand in the shallow waters and grow to maturity. You must go deeper into the waters. Follow after him.
If you would like to go a little further down the path today, I would suggest that you also read Ephesians 4:11-16. :
Ephesians 4:11-16 – It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (NIV)
